How do I find my serial number to get upgrade pricing?

Your TechTool Pro serial number can be found inside your TechTool Pro manual cover or under the "About TechTool Pro" menu when you're in the application. With the release of TechTool Pro 6 we have moved to a new registration system, so if you previously registered your software with Micromat (thank you) your info is not readily accessible to you. We suggest you check your manual cover and within the application first, or re-register during your upgrade purchase process, before contacting us.

The new 3 user Family Pack has replaced single licenses.

The TechTool Pro 6 Family Pack has now replaced the single license from previous versions, so 3 users in a household may use the software. All new single user full and upgrade versions are upgraded to Family Packs.

The new software says I have an invalid serial number, what should I do?

First check to see the 15 digit serial number is entered correctly and the caps lock is not "ON". If you copy and pasted the serial number into your new software, make sure any extra spaces or an ending period was not also pasted in.

How do I create a bootable TechTool Pro DVD?

For Intel based Macs

  • Launch Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder inside of your Applications folder).
  • Double-click the ttp60X_dvd.dmg disc image and allow it to verify and mount on the Desktop.
  • In Disk Utility, select ttp60X_dvd.dmg from the drive list.
  • Click the "Burn" icon (located in the upper left corner of the Disk Utility window).
  • Insert a blank DVD into your computer's DVD drive and then click Burn.
  • Once the burning process has finished, your Mac should eject the DVD.

For PowerPC based Macs you will need a blank DVD-R or DVD-RW disc. The DVD you create will contain MacOS X 10.5.8 Build 9L35 as its operating system in order to boot PowerPC-based Macs capable of running Mac OS X 10.5.x.

  • Copy the TechTool Pro 6 DVD (PPC).dmg file from the Extras folder on the DVD  (or on the disk image that appears on your desktop after double-clicking the .dmg file) to your desktop.
  • Once the copy of the TechTool Pro 6 DVD (PPC).dmg has completed, eject the physical TechTool Pro 6 DVD from your DVD drive.
  • Launch Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder inside of your Applications folder).
  • Double-click the TechTool Pro 6 DVD (PPC).dmg disc image and allow it verify and mount on the desktop.
  • In Disk Utility, select TechTool Pro 6 DVD (PPC).dmg from the drive list.
  • Click the "Burn" icon (located in the upper left corner of the Disk Utility window).
  • Insert a blank DVD into your computer's DVD drive and then click Burn.

My TechTool Pro boot DVD won't boot up my Mac.

TechTool Pro 6 will allow you to create a bootable partition on the active startup volume when using Mac OS X 10.5 or greater if there's enough space on the volume. For a list of machine models the TechTool Pro DVD doesn't boot, click here.

If you're using TechTool Pro 5, the system software on the bootable TechTool Pro DVD comes from an Apple software development kit that must be revised by Apple each time they release a new Mac. This process may take a few months. If you have one of the newest Mac's it may not yet be supported by the system software on the TechTool Pro DVD. Without a bootable DVD, we suggest you create an eDrive. The eDrive can be located on the main startup volume, secondary internal hard drive, or an external hard drive or device. Note, the eDrive volume will be 12GB in size and should have at least ten to fifteen percent free space remaining on the hard drive or device after the creation of the eDrive volume.

For PowerPC users, you will need to create a DVD using the TechTool Pro DVD disc image (.dmg) located in the Extras folder on the TechTool Pro DVD to boot your Mac.

How do I create an eDrive?

TechTool Pro 6 now provides the ability to create an eDrive on the active system volume without having to boot to the TechTool Pro DVD. This feature only applies to PowerPC and Intel-based Macs using Mac OS X 10.5 or greater. For OS X 10.4 you will need to boot to your TechTool Pro DVD in order to create an eDrive on the main startup volume.

To create an eDrive:

Always remember to backup important data prior to performing major operations such as eDrive creation or removal, optimizations, and volume rebuilds. The eDrive creation routine will create a 12 GB eDrive bootable volume. Confirm that the selected eDrive Destination Volume will have at least ten to fifteen percent free space remaining after the creation of the eDrive volume.

Launch the installed version of TechTool Pro 6 and click on the Tools category.

Click on the eDrive tool.

Select the active system volume as the eDrive Destination Volume and choose a bootable system volume for the Mac OS X Source Volume. By default, the current active system volume is already selected as the Mac OS X Source Volume.

NOTE 1: If there is an external or secondary internal hard drive, you have the option of selecting that as the eDrive Destination Volume.

Click on the Create eDrive button. The time to create a bootable eDrive volume will vary from machine to machine. Let the eDrive creation process continue until completion.

To boot the eDrive volume, click on the eDrive Restart button in TechTool Pro's eDrive configuration window or by restarting the computer, holding down the "option" key on the keyboard and selecting the eDrive icon.

NOTE 2: eDrive vs Boot DVD? Running TechTool Pro from an eDrive is preferable to running it from the bootable DVD, because the eDrive allows you to use virtual memory. When you run the program from the bootable DVD, virtual memory cannot be used, and there's a risk of running out of memory in the middle of replacing a disk directory, or optimizing a volume.

If you are using Leopard or Snow Leopard, you can create an eDrive without the need to boot from another volume.

How is Volume Cloning beneficial?

The Volume Cloning tool provides the ability to create an exact clone or disk image clone of a selected volume. Both features can be utilized for backing up and restoring data and, in some cases, systems and applications.

A Volume Clone of a bootable system provides a duplicate bootable volume. You can also boot to it and clone the volume back in case of an emergency.

A Disk Image Clone of a bootable volume, while not bootable, can be used to restore the system using Apple's Disk Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities).
